Short story writing

What makes a good short story? How can I write a complete short story in fewer than 180 words? How can I think of an interesting plot? How can I connect the rest of the story to the opening sentence?

I'm sure that these are only a few of the questions that you ask yourselves when you are given such a writing task. But all of you enjoy a good story, don't you? A story that makes your blood curdle, or your heart race, that brings tears to your eyes or a smile to your face?

Would you like to be able to do that for other readers? This lesson is here to show you how to become a good short story writer - and to get high marks in the exam, while you are at it!!!

This is a blended writing course for B2 level students (see Standards) but students can use it independently of the classroom. The learning objectives will also be analysed in the physical lesson, and 1), 3) and 5) of the learning activities are also done in class, with a different short story as a model. Students are then required to work with the online material and submit their work online.

  • Students' work can be pasted as a word file on the contact form. If students are unable to do so, they can submit their work on paper during the physical lesson.  Some students may choose to illustrate their work. If that is the case, they can use Storybird to do so, and then copy/paste the link to their story.
  • WEEK 1: ALL WORK MUST BE DONE BEFORE  DAY/DATE
  • Participation in the discussion forum has to take place during the week. Students who do not post a comment will have marks deducted from their written work.
  • Students' short stories have to be submitted before  DAY/DATE
  • Short stories will be posted on the website to be evaluated by other students by DAY/DATE.
